Felician Kabuga, the most wanted genocide suspect in the East African country of Rwanda, was arrested in France 25 years after his escape.
The French Ministry of Justice said in a statement that Felician Cabuga, 84, Rwanda's most wanted suspect and valued at 5 million, was living in a flat near Paris with a false identity. The statement said French forces arrested Felician on Saturday.
Felician Kabuga, a Hutu businessman, is accused of financing an extremist group in 1994 that massacred about 800,000 Tutsi and Hutu people for more than 100 days.
"Since 1994, Felician Kabuga has lived in Germany, Belgium, Congo, Kenya or Switzerland without fear of punishment," the French Justice Ministry said in a statement.
His arrest has paved the way for him to be tried first in the Paris court and then in the International Court of Justice. Rwanda's International Criminal Tribunal has charged Felicin Kabuga with genocide.
Rwandan prosecutors say financial documents obtained from the capital, Kigali, after the massacre show that Kabuga used his companies to import large-scale knives, which were used to cut people's throats.
The wealthy businessman is also accused of setting up a radio station that broadcast propaganda against the Tutsi breed and broadcast training material for extremist groups.
Felician Kabuga was considered a close friend of then-Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, whose 100-day massacre began after his plane crash.
Felician Kabuga is likely to be detained in accordance with UN procedures, where he will be tried.
