The Taliban rejected a call for a ceasefire during Ramadan

The Taliban has rejected the Afghan government's call for a ceasefire during Ramadan, saying it is unreasonable.

According to the foreign news agency 'AFP', Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had appealed to the militants to lay down their arms for Ramadan as the country is battling the Corona epidemic.

However, Sohail Shaheen, a spokesman for the Taliban's political office, said in a tweet that differences over the peace process and delays in exchanging prisoners were the main reasons for the fighting, and strongly criticized the government's offer.

He accused the government of endangering the lives of prisoners because of Corona, saying "the demand for a ceasefire is unreasonable."

It should be noted that a historic peace agreement was signed between the United States and the Taliban on February 28 this year, after which the Afghan government and the Taliban were to release each other's prisoners and inter-Afghan talks were to begin for lasting peace in the country.

The Afghan government's call for a ceasefire with the Taliban comes after dozens of Afghan security personnel were killed in attacks in recent weeks.

Recent Taliban attacks have been carried out in rural Afghanistan and small towns. Under a US-Taliban agreement, the militants agreed not to attack cities.

Under the agreement, the withdrawal of US and other foreign forces from Afghanistan will be completed by July 2021, but this will require the Taliban to maintain security guarantees and negotiate with the Afghan government. Ashraf Ghani has called for a ceasefire with the Taliban several times before.

However, the Taliban have called the Afghan government a "puppet" at the hands of foreign powers and have refused to negotiate with the government.
